v3 — The Mechanism Layer

v3 isn’t a new scenario layer, it’s a mechanism layer. The centrifuge that v1 had as metaphor becomes mechanical. McLuhan’s Law as Physical Law #9 is the underlying physics that generates Cg. And N-fiscal — Section 174A — gets named as a structural variable, not anecdote.

The five-axis flywheel

The diagnostic move of v3 is the causal flywheel:

Each axis drives the next; the cycle closes back to the start.

• Rc — Resources cannibalised. Compute, capital, talent, attention are pulled from elsewhere in the economy to feed the AI buildout. The cannibalisation is not net-new resource production; it is reallocation under crisis pricing.
• Ae — Compute efficiency inverts. The efficiency curve that should drive cost down (Wright’s Law, Chinchilla, distillation) is dominated by the rate-of-demand growth (Jevons Paradox). Net effect: the marginal cost of a query falls; the total compute spend rises faster than the per-unit fall.
• Sq — Software quality degrades. The pressure to ship erodes the engineering substrate. Bugs, vulnerabilities, regressions accumulate. The attack/defence asymmetry in software (added in v4) means that even small quality regressions compound into security failures faster than they compound into productivity gains.
• Ep — Information environment poisons. Generated content saturates the substrate the next model trains on. Provenance collapses. Signal-to-noise crashes. The library — civilisation’s last clean reading-room — gets polluted.
• Cg — Cognitive gradient. Humans sort by who notices the poisoning and who doesn’t. The noticers compound (they can use the AI without being deceived by it); the non-noticers fall behind (they cannot tell good output from confident-looking output). The gradient widens.

The flywheel turns Cg back into Rc on the next cycle: the noticers attract the resources, which feeds the next round of Rc cannibalisation, which deepens Ae, which crashes Sq, which poisons Ep, which steepens Cg. Each cycle takes maybe 6–18 months.

McLuhan’s Law as Physical Law #9

The framework names McLuhan’s Law of Media — every extension is an amputation — as Physical Law #9 of the bees-for-honey field theory. It is treated as foundational rather than derived: the extension of human cognition into AI tools simultaneously amputates whatever human capacity those tools replace, and the amputation is what generates Cg.

The flywheel is the mechanical model. Physical Law #9 is the underlying physics: extension → amputation → gradient.

N-fiscal: Section 174A named as structural variable

v3 also names Section 174A (the US tax code change that requires R&D expenses to be amortised over 5 years rather than expensed in the year incurred) as the 14x Problem — the structural reason why Australian (and broadly: non-US) R&D is taxed against its activity (salary, time, the dance) rather than against its output (the eventual product, the honey). The US gets to defer; everyone else pays as they go. At scale, this is a 14× cost-of-research differential.

Named as a structural variable rather than an anecdote means: it doesn’t go away when this tax code changes. It is the example case for the more general principle that taxing the dance instead of the honey is the structural mechanism by which sovereign innovation policy fails. The 14x Problem becomes a recurring axis across all of v3’s scenarios.

The Debt as proof-of-concept

v3 introduces a new scenario: The Debt (scenarios/debt). The argument: the AI-economic flywheel runs without producing real growth; the gap is borrowed against; the loneliness economy props up the cap table. This is the operational form of the v3 flywheel — a specific story that exhibits Rc → Ae → Sq → Ep → Cg in the present tense.

Amazon’s deleted briefing line — the one that quietly said “we are not seeing the productivity we expected” — is the v3 framework’s empirical anchor. The Debt is the framework’s prediction; the line is the data point.
